Co-op Membership Responsibilities
Mandatory co-op responsibilities include serving duty days at the school; participation on a Committee or on the Board; participation in fundraising projects, clean-ups, and attendance at General Meetings.
Duty Days: Duty parents are helpers at My School. Duty shifts are very rewarding for most parents as it is such a unique opportunity to watch your children master new skills and see budding friendships develop. For new families, duty days can seem overwhelming at first, particularly if both parents are working full-time. But what most alumni will tell you is that they are among the most enjoyable parts of being at My School. And many parents who work full-time trade-off with a spouse, partner, grandparent, nanny or other caregiver. We are happy to have multiple duty members from your child's family. Please feel free to contact us if you would like to discuss with a current or alumni family about duty days.
Please note that all persons doing duty shifts are required to complete the following forms (available to download here):
Committee Work And Individual Contributors: My School is administered totally by parents so at least one person from your child's family will volunteer for a position in the My School organization. Because we are a cooperative, these volunteers are essential to keep the school running year-to-year. There are three Standing Committees: Membership, Programming, and Social: Special Events/Fundraising. A member of each family (not necessarily the same one as the duty parent) must work on one of these committees, be a member of the Board of Directors, or take on one of our Individual Contributor positions. You can read more about the volunteer positions here.
Committee work requires time and energy, but as the meetings are usually in the evenings, it gives parents a time to meet and talk without the children and to expand their social connection within the school community.
Meetings: All members must attend the General Meetings to ratify decisions of the Board, for Committee Chairpersons to report on their work and for general members to raise concerns or issues that might require a vote. We hold two mandatory meetings annually (September and June) with additional meetings held when required.
Clean–Up Shifts: A parent from each family is required to participate in one clean up evening per year to help ensure that the toys, furniture and equipment are washed regularly and kept in good repair.
